Snellville was founded largely by the efforts of two seventeen-year-old friends from London, Thomas Snell and James Sawyer. The two set out to America in 1874, and after years of working in New York, Sawyer reconnected with his friend Snell in the area now known as Snellville. Sawyer and Snell started a popular store and Sawyer later established the first post office and was postmaster for the town.
