The land where Ellijay now sits was first inhabited by the Cherokee people; in fact, Ellijay’s name traces back to the Cherokee word, Elatseyi, meaning “New Ground”. Upon the arrival of European settlers in the early 19th century, both groups lived in the area. By 1834, Ellijay was declared the county seat of the newly formed Gilmer County and today has transformed into a popular city with a focus on tourism.
