The land where Ellijay, GA now sits was first inhabited by the Cherokee people; in fact, Ellijay’s name traces back to the Cherokee word, Elatseyi, meaning “New Ground”. Upon the arrival of European settlers in the early 19th century, both groups lived in the area.
