The original plot of land for Buckhead consisted of 202.5 acres and was purchased by Henry Irby in 1838 for $650. The district allegedly got its name when Irby killed a buck and placed its head in a prominent location in the area. After World War I, the city’s affluent residents started building their mansions in Buckhead.
