Acworth, GA has an interesting history. The city was burned to the ground in 1864 during the Civil War, with only a few houses and a church remaining. Cotton farming led to a recovery for the city. Concerned about flooding as a result of a dam built on the Etowah River, citizens petitioned for a second dam in the 1950s. The second dam resulted in Lake Acworth, which has since become a tourist attraction.
