Insurance you should have, but don’t always purchase
|
When people think about insurance, most people think about the three
most popular types of insurance: homeowners, automobile or life.
However, there are several other types of policies that you may want to
consider:
A personal liability umbrella policy of at least $1 million – This is an
extra layer of insurance (in addition to home and auto insurance) that
protects anyone who may be at risk if they’re responsible for a serious
accident. If a claim or lawsuit exceeds your liability coverage (most
cover up to $500K), the person suing may go after your home or other
assets to pay for the damage. Umbrella policies cover damage that you,
your family or pets may have caused.
Identity fraud protection – Identity fraud has become a serious problem
in today’s society. There are many expenses that are incurred during the
cleanup process. Identity fraud protection covers lost wages for taking
time off from work to deal with fraud; attorney’s fees to clear your
name; notary/certified mailing costs for fraud affidavits; and phone
charges for calling merchants and financial institutions to discuss the
fraud. Most policies provide up to $15,000 in coverage and can be added
to an existing homeowner’s policy at an average of $25 per year.
All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) policy – Most homeowners policies do not cover
ATVs and many states require ATV insurance for vehicles operated on
state-owned land. An ATV policy protects your investment from damage or
theft.
Flood insurance - This is not covered under homeowner’s insurance;
however, a separate policy for flood insurance can be purchased. Many
people are under the misconception that you have to live by a body of
water to have flood insurance, which is not true. Anyone can purchase
flood insurance.
